She had the perfect name for the occasion but 6 year old Ice Direen was too busy for interviews at Naseby's Ice Festival.

The Oamaru girl had already been on the luge and was trying out skating when the Otago Daily Times caught up with her. Her father Steve said Ice was a shortened version of her full name.

''It's Thai and don't ask me how to spell it.''

She was making the most of all the activities on offer and was enjoying her first experience of the annual ice festival.

The Maniototo International Curling Rink, Maniototo Ice Rink and Naseby Ice Luge facilities are next door to each other and joined forces to run the one day festival on Saturday.

About 600 people took the chance to try indoor and outdoor curling, ice skating, luging and sledging in the newly formed snow park.

Maniototo Ice Rink spokesman Jock Scott said all the activities had been busy but the snow park had been extra popular. People could bring their own sledges or use the ones provided.

''They get on the slope and you can hear howls of delight. Even the little kids, although they're screaming as they come down the slope, all they want to do is go back up to the top and slide down again.''

The festival finished with an ice dance at the skating rink.
