The death of an experienced hunter, who failed to return from a solo hunting trip in the Rock and Pillar range, was ''a real tragedy'', police said yesterday.

James Peter Barry Tuite (20), of Winchester, had apparently crashed his quad bike on steep terrain while hunting on Friday, about 2.5km south of the Hamilton Diggings, near Waipiata, Sergeant Simon Paget, of Cromwell, said.

Mr Tuite intended to spend Friday afternoon hunting and his family was concerned when he failed to return that evening as expected, Sgt Paget said.

Police were told he was missing about 11.30pm and because of the steep terrain, the search was to be begin at dawn the following day.

Mr Tuite's body was found by a family member early on Saturday.

The family member ''sort of had a good idea of where he might be, because they were familiar with the area'', Sgt Paget said.

''It was a very unfortunate end to the hunting trip and a real tragedy.''

His death had been referred to the coroner. Sgt Paget said it was the second serious quad-bike crash in the district in a short space of time.

A 28-year-old Tarras man was airlifted to Dunedin Hospital after losing control of his quad bike and crashing on State Highway 8 at Tarras on Saturday afternoon.

The man was discharged from hospital yesterday and the police investigation into the accident was continuing.

''Although there are no parallels between these two quad-bike incidents, except that both involve young riders, we'd like to remind people they need to know the limits of their ability as a rider and the limits of the bike, what the quad bike is suited to.

"Just like driving any motor vehicle, there's always the potential for things to go wrong,'' Sgt Paget said.
