The first stage of a project to convert the old Lawrence swimming pool into a park is almost complete.

All the cladding was removed from the old pool building over the last week, and the pool would be filled with concrete in the next few days, building contractor Sam Chapman, of Lawrence, said.

Mr Chapman has removed the cladding and is now removing the structure's purlins (from the roof framing). Bill Fitzgerald Contracting would then fill in the pool, Mr Chapman said.

The work is part of the ''Lawrence Arches'' project to convert the old pool into a decorative garden and park area.

The main arches of the pool building will be retained and treated, the area will be planted with grass and lights will be installed.

Lawrence-Tuapeka Community Board chairman Garry McCorkindale said the idea for the garden project had come from Lawrence resident Marjorie Hay.

''She was the inspiration for it all.''

He said the project would create an ''interesting feature'' at the entrance to the town.

''It's going to turn what was a bit of an eyesore into a type of feature.''

The community board had provided about $25,000 for the project, which was the amount that would have been spent removing the old pool and reinstating the site, Mr McCorkindale said.

The Lawrence Cultural and Heritage Trust, which is organising the project, is applying for other grants to pay for the remainder of the project.
