Two new camper van effluent stations in Central Otago might not be the ''Rolls-Royces'' of such facilities, but they will do the trick.
Central Otago district councillors agreed this week to construct stations at Alexandra and Cromwell, at an estimated cost of about $47,600 and $35,600 respectively.
Last year, the possibility of spending $100,000 on camper van effluent stations proposed in Alexandra and Cromwell generated more submissions to the draft annual plan than any other topic.
Many submissions said the $100,000 cost for each dumping station seemed excessive.
The Cromwell and Vincent Community Boards agreed to budget $40,000 for each facility.
The council has now considered five potential Alexandra sites and the same number in Cromwell.
Council water services manager Russell Bond said there had been ''significant community input'' on the current state of motorhome disposal sites, the majority commenting on the lack of facilities. The additional sites were much-needed, he said.
The majority of dumping stations in the district were operated by people who charged motorhome users for access.
Although the quantity of privately owned stations was high, the number of council owned free-to-use stations was limited.
The motorhome community was '' a considerable income source'' for Central Otago, Mr Bond said.
The Cromwell dumping station will be sited at Richards Beach Rd, just before the wastewater plant, and the Alexandra one at Boundary Rd, opposite Humes yard.
