A"Shave for a Cure'' day in Cromwell on Saturday had people queuing up to lose their hair.

Organiser Ernst Jonkers, who works for Grape Vision in Cromwell, decided to try to raise money for the Leukemia Blood Foundation and the idea ‘‘grew like Topsy''.

Mr Jonkers had persuaded six people to take part in the shave - including the removal of the long ponytail he had had for 18 years - and as the time drew near, a seventh person lined up, too.

While the seven heads were being shaved, a further three people decided they would also take up the challenge.

The shave, performed in the Cromwell Placemakers car park, raised $1700 for the charity.

Michelle Wilkinson, from Misha's Vineyard, sponsored five Grape Vision workers to the tune of $100 each and she also provided beanies for the volunteers who took part in the shave.

Bev Quayle, from Ahead in Thyme, and Joan Bennett, from Cromwell Beauty Centre, volunteered their time and both said it was the first time they had cut hair outside using a generator.
