Cromwell Community Squash Club members who ''got off their butts'' to make things happen were praised by Central Otago Mayor Tony Lepper, who opened the club's upgraded facility on Saturday.

''The highlight for me was that you guys, and the community, got off their butts to do this,'' Mr Lepper said.

The $400,000 upgrade was completed in September, just in time for Cromwell to host the D Grade Superchamps tournament, which attracted about 180 people to the town.

The home club's men's team won the tournament while the Cromwell women's side was runner up in its section. Mr Lepper said he had a ''brief squash career, before rugby and other things took over''.

The renovation project included the addition of a third court, new changing facilities and a new kitchen area.

Project manager Don McDonald said an ''immense''amount of volunteer work went into the upgrade and businesses had been generous in sponsoring the development plus donating and discounting materials and labour.

''The thing I'm most proud of is this sign'' he said, indicating a list of sponsors and funding agencies.

''I think we've not just built this club up to be a success. Over a number of years, we've left a legacy,'' Mr McDonald said. Cromwell Community Board chairman and deputy mayor Neil Gillespie said the club's success was built on the hard work of its members.

When the Clyde Dam was completed, membership dwindled as people left the town. The club worked hard to survive the downturn and improve facilities, from when socialising was in ''haybales and a tarpaulin''.

''You've made it easy for the community board to support and the great work by the club has resulted in a fantastic asset for the future.''
