Construction of Clinton's 24-hour fuel stop is "full steam ahead".

John Cochrane, managing director of the Clinton Community Company, said consent was granted on Friday, work began on site yesterday and he expected the stop to be pumping fuel by mid-March.

A 30,000 litre diesel storage tank was on site, and a 15,000 litre petrol tank would be delivered in the next few weeks.

Both tanks would be stored above ground in a concrete bund, which is yet to be built.

"We have been digging holes for an interceptor [for separating fuel from waste water], which is part of the drainage system," Mr Cochrane said.

Work on the shop would not begin until it had been leased to a suitable retailer, as the community company had offered to build the shop to suit the lease-holder.

"We've got to get some expressions of interest from people who are interested in leasing the retail outlet.

"We are also looking for carpenters with an expression of interest to build a purpose-built retail outlet."

Mr Cochrane said fuel would be pumping at the site regardless of whether there was an occupant in the shop.

"First and foremost, our priority was to get the fuel pumping again.

"Stage one was to put the fuel back on site, stage two was the retail side.

"We are concentrating on stage one at this stage."

"It's full steam ahead for us . . ."
