Lower Hutt police are looking for a man after a 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted in Stokes Valley this afternoon.
The girl was walking across Delaney Park on her way home when she was grabbed by a man and pulled into a nearby alley, where she was sexually violated, Acting Detective Sergeant Fleur de Bes said.
The incident occurred about 3.30pm and the man ran off, Ms de Bes said.
Police believe he may have been loitering around the park area.
"There is a strong likelihood that he may have come to the attention of the public as it is believed that he was drinking in the area," she said.
The man was described as Maori, around 30, with tight curly hair and wearing a black hoody, blue jeans and work boots.
The victim was wearing a white top and cardigan and pale purple shorts.
Ms de Bes said anyone with information should contact Lower Hutt police on 04 560 2600.
