$1.6 million upgrade for road

The Crown Range Rd will get a $1.6 million upgrade after the Queenstown Lakes District Council's utilities committee approved a concept design at its meeting yesterday.

Council capital works manager Ken Gousmett said four sites along the road would be resealed, pavements upgraded, and water tables and culverts cleared and regraded next year.

He said it was important to have the work done in the "optimal weather period" of January to March.

The road's pavements had extensive rutting, loss of shape and lack of drainage, leading to safety issues.

Poor drainage led to ice forming during winter and 24 of the 40 crashes in the last five years were caused by loss of control on ice or loose material.
