They were all taking part in the Concour Oral, an annual French-speaking competition organised by Alliance Francaise Dunedin.
Organiser David Moir said the pupils loved the competition, especially the social side of it.
Year nine and 10 pupils gave a short presentation about themselves, year 11 and 12 pupils had a five-minute interview and year 13 pupils had a listening comprehension test and a six-minute interview.
The top year 12 pupil would be entered in a national draw for a two-week stay in New Caledonia and the top two year 13 pupils would enter a national competition with a prize of a month in Paris.
Results for these would be available in September, Mr Moir said.
