Stampede off to good start

The Southern Stampede opened its 2009 ice hockey campaign with wins over the West Auckland Admirals on Friday and Saturday.

Manager Charlie Reid said the 6-0 and 6-2 wins boded well for the season.

"It was a good win for us in an intense game," he said.

The Stampede won the league in 2005 and 2006 but has performed poorly by its standards over the past two seasons.

Reid was pleased with the crowd of about 150, considering the game clashed with the New Zealand-France rugby test match on Saturday night.
