In the clash between Footballsouth's top sides, Dunedin Technical emerged triumphant, beating Roslyn-Wakari 2-0 at Ellis Park on Saturday.

Aaron Burgess was hard to suppress, and after an even 40 minutes, the Technical striker drew a rash foul from Terry Boylan and referee Phil Lyall had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot.

Burgess firmly rammed his 16th goal of the season past a despairing dive by Roslyn keeper Nathan Watt, and was immediately submerged by celebrating team-mates.

However, what might have been the goal of the match rebounded off Roslyn's left goalpost after Burgess struck a venomous free kick which dipped over Roslyn's defensive wall.

Technical had an edgein directness and penetration, while Roslyn strung passes together but failed with its final ball, to the extent that Technical's keeper was underemployed for most of the match.

But there was enough action for everyone in the heart of midfield where there were some epic tackles and the whistle of referee Lyall was at full volume.

Andy Coburn earned Technical's man of the match award with a powerhouse display, while Roslyn's Sean Brand also slammed on several physical challenges and clocked up many metres pressuring the opposition.

Probably the most effective wide player was Justin Flaws, who showed his specialist skills and good delivery, so it was fitting that he snatched Technical's second goal in the 63rd minute.

Burgess again found space and drilled an acute angled shot which keeper Grant spilled at the near post, and Flaws was in like a flash to force in Technical's safety goal.

At Tonga Park, Caversham posted notice that it was back to top form with a 7-0 demolition of player-coach Barry Gardiner's Spirit FC which had only conceded three goals this season.

Striker Tom Jackson grabbed a hat-trick, David Dugdale scored twice, Robbie Deeley once, and an own goal by Spirit finished the scoring.

At the Caledonian Ground, University's FPL side was just too quick and strong for the Otago Youth side and scored regularly to emerge with a 4-0 win.

James Watson showed his undoubted class in defence for the Youth side, but too often the ball was given away cheaply.

Varsity coach Alan Bain was delighted with his side's composure as American Bo Wilkins showed pace and trickery wide on the right.

Dom Higgins opened Varsity's scoring after 21 minutes, and later materialised to chest in his second goal from a Wilkins cross.

In between, Varsity's other American, Todd Wallenius, timed his run perfectly at the near post to turn in another low cross, and Alex Mason finished the scoring.

Northern earned an unexpected 3-2 win over Green Island, whose coaching staff now includes former Otago United coach Malcolm Fleming.

The match finished with each side down to 10 men.

Tim Smith took his personal total to four goals this season when he hit a spectacular winner, which leapfrogs Northern over Green Island on the FPL table.

Striker Ryan Atherton scored both of the Island goals.

At Ocean Grove, battling Grants Braes kept Queenstown honest before eventually going down 2-1 to the Central Otago side.

Ben Eder scored for Braes and Queenstown striker Wagner Santana equalised, but it was a cruel own goal that gave coach Darren Rewi's side the win.
