Electoral officer Pam Jordan said the manned booth would be on rotation around the different locations.
At different times it would be based at Port Chalmers, Waitati, Mosgiel and Waikouaiti libraries and the council was also investigating a suitable location in South Dunedin, she said.
With the council election being a postal vote, the booths were aimed at people who needed to cast special votes.
This could be because they were not enrolled at the right address, meaning they were not sent papers, people on the unpublished electoral role, or who had lost their papers.
It was aimed at boosting voting numbers and could be repeated at future elections if it was found to be successful.
As in past elections, there would also be a voting booth at the civic centre.
The booths would be open for two weeks from September 26 and details as to where they would be on each day would be advertised at a later date.
