The Otago Goldrush could not have done any better at its tournament in Nelson over the weekend.
The side played in the second leg of the national women's championships and picked up four wins from as many games.
It had opened its account on Friday with two wins, beating Tauranga 65-62 and Waitakere 70-57.
On Saturday it had a comfortable 59-34 win over the bottom-ranked Te Tai Tokerau Phoenix.
Yesterday, with the game starting at 8.30am, the side took on Waikato and ended up winning comfortably 68-46.
Goldrush coach Todd Marshall said he could not fault the side for the way it played and pointed to a good defensive effort against Waikato yesterday morning.
Marshall said the side restricted Waikato to tough shots and hassled them all game.
The pressure told on Waikato, which could not get shots away, while at the other end the Goldrush kept putting up the points.
Marshall said the side shot about 40%, which was good enough and the team pulled away, more the further the game went along.
Soraya Umaga-Jensen put together a good performance over the weekend, getting in the points with some good shooting, while Aleisha Ruske scored 14 points in the win over the women from Waikato.
The only concern for the side was a calf injury picked up by Natalie Visger early in the game against Waikato.
She was forced out of the game early and Marshall was hopeful she would be right for the finals in Porirua next month.
The side now has a record of seven wins and one loss and has a game against Canterbury, the competition leaders, in Dunedin in a couple of weeks to round out its round-robin play.
It will then head to Porirua for the finals on May 12-14.
