Rugby: Co-captain Christie happy with Highlanders

Shane Christie is taking to the Highlanders captaincy, make that co-captaincy, like a duck to water.

He is surrounded by good players, the side is winning, and winning well, and this captaincy lark is something Christie is soaking up.

"I have not changed my personality and all that. It has been pretty awesome to step into the role, as we have plenty of leaders in our team,'' he said.

"Everyone does their job. I keep more of an eye how things are going in terms of attitude and make sure the boys are turning up and preparing really well.''

Christie (30) has captaincy experience, having led the Tasman side last year, and said the environment in the Highlanders made his job easier.

"It feels like we are just getting into it and we have had an awesome couple of weeks over in Aussie. That was a nice break. But it's good to be home and play at home and then we get to go away again.

"[Going away] is good for the team and if you have a good environment like we have it is great. We did heaps on our days off. Our manager organised some awesome stuff.''

Included in the Australian jaunts was a trip to the site of long-running Australian soap Home and Away.

"Some of them went to Summer Bay. Is it a big deal? I don't know. I went for a surf. Home and Away - I never watched it.''

But away from the travels the side knows it is about performing on the paddock.

The attitude must be right and the chances when they come along must be seized upon.

Defence is all about attitude, so minds must be right to keep the opponent at bay.

"I think our tackle completion rate last week was something like 91.7 to 92%, so we are going good. It is just about preparation and attitude. That is what defence comes down to - having the right attitude. That can be hard to do week to week.''

This match looks like it can only go one way, with the Highlanders overwhelming favourite.

The side has four wins in a row and bagged the first try-scoring point of the season last week in a comfortable - almost clinical - win over the Rebels.

Now the Force rolls into town.

The Force has one win on the board and was well beaten 53-10 by the Chiefs in Hamilton last Saturday.

The side is also under pressure off the field and the franchise could be taken over by the Australian Rugby Union, as it battles financial woes.

But adversity can unite teams and the Force will not die wondering. No Australian team ever does.

The Highlanders simply must not take them lightly.
