Eager bookworms were lined up well before the 9am opening of the 21st Alexandra Rotary five-day book sale in Alexandra yesterday, but they need not have rushed as there were thousands of books available.

There was a steady stream of patrons moving through St Enoch's Hall and leaving with armfuls of books and large smiles on their faces.

The selection was vast, from religious books to children's books and every type of do-it-yourself book imaginable, as well as the usual plethora of Mills and Boon for those lazy summer days along with many recent thrillers and novels.

Tucked away underneath one table was an entire collection of Agatha Christie novels for just $25.

Chris and Melanie Young had called in on their way through Alexandra to see what was on offer.

Mr Young was very happy with his armful of James Patterson thrillers while his wife was stocking up on children's books for the youngster at home and the new one on the way.

Lisa McGregor from Dunedin was more than happy to have a bundle of travel books to read while on holiday.

Rotary book sale convener Mike Rooney said some eager people lined up before the doors opened, and there was a steady stream through the hall all day.

The last day of the sale is December 30. The sale is on from 9am to 5pm each day.
