Dunedin teen killed in Mt Cook crash named

Police have released the name of a Dunedin teenager who died in a crash in Aoraki Mt Cook National Park on Monday.

Rebecca Louise Townshend (18) was a passenger in a black Toyota hatchback which police think left Tasman Valley Rd at a slight bend and rolled early on Monday morning.

Senior Constable Les Andrew said there were three women in the car at the time of the crash, and it  was possible the driver was distracted, or tired. 

Ms Townshend was confirmed dead at the scene, he said.

A 19-year-old woman was flown to Dunedin Hospital with facial and leg injuries, while the third occupant, a 21-year-old, was flown to Christchurch Hospital with suspected spinal injuries.

The three women were all employed by the Hermitage Hotel.

The death has been referred to the Coroner and police investigations are continuing.
