His delivery was a little wide when he broke the news to district councillors at the monthly meeting this week, but he finally disclosed his latest role.
''Don't any of you laugh,'' he warned them, before announcing he had been appointed to the board of Bowls New Zealand, the sport's national governing body.
The appointment takes effect from next month.
''I was appointed for my governance experience, as opposed to my bowling ability,'' he was quick to add.
Mr Lepper is a keen sportsman and is a bowls player.
''I'm still only a junior bowler,'' he said in response to gentle ribbing from councillors.
A Bowls New Zealand spokeswoman said no official announcement would be made about new board appointments until after the board's annual meeting next month.
