Enforcement for parking explored

The days of unrestricted parking in the central business districts of Cromwell and Alexandra are numbered.

A bylaw allowing the Central Otago District Council to impose parking fines ranging from $20 to $50 took effect last month, extra parking restriction signs are being installed and the council is exploring various options for enforcement.

''We're still working through the enforcement side of things, how it's going to be done, and a report on the various options will soon go back to the community boards involved,'' council roading manager Julie Muir said.

''What we do know is that it won't be [policed] every day, full-time. It'll be a random sort of thing and we've yet to decide how we'll go about managing that.''

One option being considered was sharing a parking warden with the Queenstown Lakes District Council but that was only one of several options, she said.

Restricted parking zones were introduced in 2007 but no enforcement was undertaken as there was no bylaw at that stage.

Town centre parks in Cromwell and Alexandra have restrictions ranging from 10 minutes to two hours, depending on the location. Sorting out the paperwork also had to be done, she said.

''That's something else we have to do as we're not geared up to do that yet. We need to sort out what happens when people get infringement notices, where they can pay, that sort of thing.''

The council received ''a lot'' of complaints from members of the public about motorists parking on yellow lines and across accessways and whoever was employed to enforce the parking restrictions would also be addressing those problems, Ms Muir said.
