Maintaining lake health focus of guardians group

The newly-formed Guardians of Lake Dunstan will focus on promoting the overall health of the lake - controlling the lakeweed and keeping an eye on water quality.

A public meeting will be held soon in Cromwell for all interested parties, guardians spokesman Andrew Burton, of Lowburn, said.

There were also plans to form a trust to further the aims and objectives of the guardians.

Avenues of funding such a venture would be explored.

The guardians group was set up because of concerns about the invasive lake weed lagarosiphon and controlling the weed would remain its initial focus but it would also keep a check on water quality, he said.

''We are keen to see all of the lake in pristine condition for the benefit of all users.''

Mr Burton said the group recently met agencies involved in the management of the lake ''to formalise agreement on the way forward jointly''.

The guardians had been invited to be part of the lake management group.

Although eradication of the lakeweed was not possible with the available tools, the guardians would be exploring using any other means of weed control, including mechanical means, in conjunction with weed spraying, ''We are excited at the prospects of using these new methods and of course, these new ways will be eco-friendly and harmless to the environment,'' Mr Burton said.

The group was grateful to the Guardians of Lake Wanaka for their assistance so far.

Although many of the challenges faced by the Wanaka group were different from the Lake Dunstan one, their objectives were the same.

''We don't want to reinvent the wheel, so will follow many of their ideas for continuing attempts to control this noxious weed and to monitor other things of importance.''
