The senior pupils may be at school camp, but Port Chalmers School middle school pupils will still "go bush'' and learn camping and outdoor skills this week - all from the safety of the school playground.

Principal Robyne Selbie said the school was running an Outdoor Education Week for year 3 to 6 pupils while year 7 and 8 pupils attended Camp Iona, near Herbert.

Year 1 and 2 pupils would take part in a tramp to Back Beach.

This week, pupils would learn how to pitch tents, take part in orienteering and map reading exercises and group initiative tasks, and tramp to Back Beach and Rangi Peak.

They would also keep sketch diaries during the programme's orientation component so they developed observational skills and were encouraged to build visual maps of their environment, she said.

A highlight of the week was "dry land'' aquatics practice, followed by kayaking events.

Mrs Selbie said the school was also reviving a "Kladdie Cup'' event, during which pupils would build their own water-craft from found materials before taking to the water at Mussel Bay tomorrow.
