One of three Dunedin developments nominated for a Property Council New Zealand award, the Staveley Building Apartments, has won an accolade.

The 136-year-old building on the corner of Jetty and Bond Sts was badly damaged by a fire in 2008. Dunedin-based developer Bruce Purvis bought it in 2010.

Stavely was nominated for two awards, in the Hawkins Construction Heritage and Adaptive Reuses Property Award and the Arrow International Multi-Unit Residential Property Award.

While Clyde Quay Wharf, in Wellington, was best in category for the Arrow International Multi-Unit, Stavely was awarded an ''excellence'' in that category, ahead of three other buildings in Auckland and Wellington.

The building was refurbished over three years in an extensive works programme, including replacement of the roof, facade restoration and seismic strengthening.

Eleven designer city apartments were created, all facing an inner open courtyard and several with rooftop balconies.

The recently opened Chep New Zealand development, in Sturdee St, and the Nichols Garden Centre redevelopment, both in Dunedin, were also finalists for awards.

Of 92 finalists spread over 10 categories, the Rider Levett Bucknall Supreme Award was won by the Clyde Quay Wharf development in Wellington. It is a residential, 76-apartment development, plus offices and retail, built on a 1907 wharf.
