Tree stops car, caravan falling down bank

A fruit tree was all that stopped a car and caravan from tumbling further down a bank into the Clutha River near Roxburgh yesterday afternoon.

An elderly Gore couple were driving home after camping in Central Otago, when the caravan ''got the wobbles'', Senior Constable Arnold Hooykaas said.

The Toyota RAV4 towing the caravan left the road, went down the bank and was stopped by a fruit tree, with the caravan landing on top of the car, he said.

The couple were uninjured and managed to get out of the vehicle.

The vehicle travelled about 5m down the steep bank and the couple were very lucky it did not drop down into the Clutha, Snr Const Hooykaas said.

An infringement notice was issued to the 75-year-old female driver for failing to stay within the lane, he said.
