Lights out

Oamaru police are trying to locate the driver of a Mitsubishi Legnum, who demolished a set of traffic lights

early yesterday before parking the vehicle across the road from the police station and fleeing the scene.

The crash at the intersection of Severn and Thames Sts was reported at 12.06am, by a member of the public.

A traffic light pole was ripped from the ground.

Senior Sergeant Jason McCoy, of Oamaru, said the driver parked the blue Mitsubishi Legnum directly across the road from the Oamaru Police Station, nearby.

''They ran off and are yet to be located, so inquiries are continuing,'' Snr Sgt McCoy said.

Police were yesterday keeping an eye on the vehicle from the station.

Police said anyone with information should contact Oamaru Police Station on 03 433-1400 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555-111.
