A 37-year-old Oamaru man was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital with a serious back injury on Tuesday night, after his car crashed into a bank on Parsons Rd.

Sergeant Blair Wilkinson, of Oamaru, said the vehicle left the road about 10pm and hit a bank.

Parsons Road, between Tutu Hill Rd and Saleyards Rd, was closed to allow the serious crash unit to investigate.

It was reopened about 1.30pm yesterday.

''The cause of the crash is yet to be ascertained,'' Sgt Wilkinson said.

Oamaru police are appealing for witnesses to a non-injury crash in Oamaru on Tuesday night.

About 7.05pm, a green Toyota Caldina station wagon and a red Hyundai vehicle collided at the intersection of Eden St and Thames Hwy.

''[Police] are trying to work out what the light sequence was around that crash,'' Sgt Wilkinson said.

''So anyone who was travelling through that intersection at the time that crash occurred and ... can help [police] ascertain what the light sequence was, that would be good.''

Anyone with information can contact the Oamaru Police Station on (03) 433-1400.
