House of Breakthrough wants to ease the pressure of Christmas by putting on another event to remember in Oamaru.

Oamaru's Christmas in the Park started as a ''last-minute thing'' four years ago, but has grown to take pride of place on the town's social calendar.

More than 2000 people are expected to attend this year's event at Takaro Park, a night of free entertainment.

''It's grown each year,'' one of the organisers, Jacinda Goodsir, said.

''We've always wanted to do something a bit bigger each year,'' she said.

The event will begin with a tug-of-war showdown between eight community groups.

What started as a ''bit of banter'' had turned into a serious competition, Mrs Goodsir said.

Teams representing police, fire, Waitaki District Council, Soul Surf and Skate, Harbourside Fitness, Fitness 24, House of Breakthrough and Elim Church will go head-to-head for two minutes in heats, semifinals, and a grand final at 4.45pm.

''No-one wants to lose. They are all pumped,'' Mrs Goodsir said.

While everyone is gathered at Takaro Park, organisers hope to attempt a party popper world record. They have 1000 party poppers ready to be popped simultaneously. The current world record is 743.

Entertainment includes the Bella Cadets, Braxton Bluegrass, The Bedfords and the House of Breakthrough Christmas Choir and Band.

There will be a free sausage sizzle, with 2000 sausages to be given away.

For the kids, activities include a 7m-high inflatable slide, as well as another three bouncy castles, face painting, a Noddy train and a festive photo booth.

''Bring a rug, set yourself up and just relax and listen to the music while your kids are having a blast,'' she said.

''It's going to be great.''

Organisers will also be seeking nominations for five people deserving of ''Christmas Blessing Hampers''.

Christmas in the Park will run from 3pm to 6pm on December 21.
