A large old ''rabbit warren'' of a school block at Taieri College is being demolished to build three smaller new buildings.

Principal David Hunter said Amalgamated Builders won the tender to demolish and remove A Block and replace it with three buildings - for a library/information centre, administration and teaching - with a budget of about $4.1 million.

''It is a fairly big job,'' Mr Hunter said.

''The designs look really good.

''It is really exciting.''

Demolition of A Block is expected to start this week, because exams have finished, so the need for quiet had passed and demolition could begin.

''The old girl is about to go.''

A Block was built in the late 1930s and was the original school building and had been added to over time.

''It has become a real rabbit warren of a building with appendages all over the place.''

A 44-week construction plan will hopefully have the new redevelopment open by next summer, he says.

''We are rapt it's finally happening,'' he said.

''It's going to be good watching it go up.''
