Tourist charged in fatal crash

A tourist driver accused of crossing the centre line and causing a head-on South Canterbury smash that killed one of his passengers has been charged.

The rental car driver, 27-year old Hong Kong national Shu Na Lo, who has been studying in Melbourne, Australia, was due to appear at Christchurch District Court this morning on charges of careless driving causing death.

Lo is accused of causing the fatal smash on the State Highway 79 Geraldine-Fairlie road last Tuesday which claimed the life of King Wai Vip, a 66-year old Hong Kong national.

Vip, a backseat passenger, died at the scene despite efforts to save her by paramedics from Western Australia who had been travelling through the region and were first on the scene.

Lo also faces two other charges of careless driving causing injury to May Wong Kot and Graham John Dawson.

Today, Lo was granted a registrar's remand on bail to appear in court on October 21.

The road, with an open road 100km/h speed limit, is one of the main highways on the scenic route inland from Christchurch to Tekapo and Queenstown and was popular with tourists.

Police investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
