Dunedin residents might need to put an extra blanket on their beds this week, as colder-than-average temperatures begin to bite.
MetService forecaster Tuporo Masters said today and tomorrow temperatures would be about 5°C below average for this time of year.
"We’re officially in autumn, and it doesn’t take much to get this cold.
"It depends on which way the wind blows. If it’s coming from [the] Antarctic, it’s going to be blistering.
"In this instance, the wind is coming from the Southern Ocean. It’s enough to pull all that cold unstable air in the Deep South and it will scrape Dunedin.
"It will be especially cold at night time. You’re looking at temperatures below 10°C overnight, so it’s probably best to put on an extra blanket on the bed."
The temperatures were expected to creep up on Thursday, he said.
"But until then, you’re punching below average, you’ve got no cloud to keep all the warmth in."
On Thursday, a front approaching from the west would lead to highs of about 20°C in Dunedin, he said.
"But that front will soon run out of gas."
