The historic Hayes Engineering Works at Oturehua will have every item at the works catalogued for posterity.
A team of cataloguers hired by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust will be on site next week to document every item. The trust property is part of an ambitious project by the heritage agency to electronically catalogue historic items at each of its properties and make the information available online.
More than 4000 items are believed to be held at Hayes, which was given Category 1 registration in 1981.
Trust Heritage destinations manager Elizabeth Cox said the site appeared much as when it was when in full operation.
Inventor Ernest Hayes established the workshops at Oturehua in 1895, providing everything from wire strainers to windmills and his business had a worldwide reputation.
