Mosgiel driver hoofs it to 14th rallysprint victory

Mosgiel driver Chris Hey has collected yet another Ashley Forest Rallysprint title.

That is 14 now. And they are all in a row.

He teamed up with his son Koby, 18, in the two-wheel-drive class at the weekend and they "cruised" to a win, with a fastest time of 1min 1.99sec.

The official term is they were hoofing it.

"After the top-32 elimination run, we had a 7sec lead over Australian drivers Stewart Reid (Queensland) and Glenn Alcon (Perth)," Hey wrote in an email to the Otago Daily Times.

"This was a comfortable enough margin to enable us to collect the 2WD title in the final.

"The event was once again extremely well organised by the RATEC car club and we will definitely be back to defend our title next year."

Dubbed the king of Ashley Forrest, Hey teamed up with his son six years ago to break the long-standing 2WD record.

It had stood for 29 years, so it was quite an achievement.

Kim Austin had held the record since 1988 with his time of 1min 2.45sec.

Hey dipped under that with 1min 2.15sec and trimmed more time off his own record in 2019 with a sizzling run of 1min 0.9sec.

Hey’s daughter Jorja has also sat in the co-driver’s seat.

The Ashley Forest Rallysprint was an "iconic event for New Zealand motorsport" and he loved racing on the road he had described in the past "as probably one of the best roads I’ve ever driven on".

"I’ve just got to get there every year.

"It is my favourite event for the year," he said after last year’s victory.
