Riversdale Arts president Kerryn Miller, media liaison Christine O’Connor and Riversdale Rugby Club president Jim McKeown presented the couple with a ceramic model of Nurse Maud Mouse.
The model, made by Paula Archibald of Wellington, was part of the Riversdale Arts Exhibition.
The rugby club, arts group and community members bought the mouse, which was worth more than $1800.
Mrs O’Connor said an arts committee member suggested the mouse would be a good gift for the couple as they had been very involved with Riversdale St John for more than 20 years.
"They give up their time to do so much in the community."
The ceramic symbolised the many tasks involved with being a first responder, she said.
When it came to raising the money no-one hesitated to give, Mrs O’Connor said.
"Everybody appreciates what they do.
"It’s not just Riversdale — it’s the district."
Often when Mr Hurley was working he would stop work and answer the call to "save someone’s life", she said.
Mr McKeown said the rugby club also appreciated the couple attending games and giving up their time.
"Home and away they are always there to make sure the players are looked after and get the care they need if they are injured."
The couple said they appreciated the gift.
"I’m overwhelmed.
"Entirely unnecessary," Mrs Hurley said.
