Having painted all around the world for the past 18 years, a renowned street artist has turned his focus to support young people from small New Zealand towns.

Tauranga street artist Graham Hoete, who also goes by the name of Mr G, was approached to create a mural that celebrates and shows support for New Zealand’s Football Ferns.

Work began on Saturday night, Mr G and his team working hard to complete it before the Ferns played Switzerland last night.

In the mural, Football Fern Claudia Bunge is the star of the show, brightly captured in yellow and pink.

As well as giving more visibility to New Zealand players, the mural celebrated wāhine off the pitch, Mr G said.

It was a part of his larger project to provide opportunities to young girls from small town communities.

"It’s about just celebrating our players and bringing in kids from our small towns to be a part of that process.

"A lot of the kids in our small town communities miss out on a lot of cool stuff so its just one way of making them the priority."

The Tumanako Project, named after the Māori word for hope, is a project run by Mr G and his partner.

He takes young emerging artists under his wing and gives them opportunities to develop their skills.

They are given input into the design and a role painting the murals.

Kaitaia teenager Hineteaio Chapman was selected to work on this mural.

She said she was grateful and proud to be a part of the project.
