The winners of last year's World Heli Challenge, Wanaka couple Will Jackways and Abby Lockhart (above), are hoping one day will be enough to repeat their success following the cancellation of the second scheduled day.

Organisers yesterday cited increasing avalanche risk in the steep terrain earmarked for the elite heli-accessed free ride event held out of Wanaka.

Event manager KJ Randall said it was only the second time the full two days had not been completed.

Mr Jackways (30) and Ms Lockhart (31) won the men's and women's events on both days last year and had been looking forward to backing up solid performances in the freestyle day last week, Mr Jackways, a professional rider, said.

While they both thought the cancellation was a shame, safety was paramount and they fully supported the decision.

At Thursday's awards evening, the pair will find out how they fared, among the 22 skiers and snowboarders from around the globe, from their freestyle day's judged run at previously unridden terrain on Mt Turner, in the Wilkin Valley area.

The couple are based in Wanaka until about December when they head to the northern hemisphere winter, to snowboard for film and magazine shoots.
