Titanium led the way for Otago breeders at the New Zealand Premier standardbred yearling sales in Christchurch yesterday, topping the first day of the two-day sale.

The impressive son of Art Major impressed buyers and he will do his racing in Australia after being sold to one of Australasia's biggest owners, Emilio Rosati.

The Art Major-Asabella colt, sold on account of Glenbrook Park in Mosgiel and prepared by Graeme and Ann Mee, attracted a top bid of $170,000 from Rosati, of Sydney, who races all his horses with the suffix Stride, including Excel Stride, who lines up in the Interdominion grand final in Sydney on March 3.

Titanium's immediate family out of the In The Pocket mare Asabella is dripping with quality. Ohoka's Bondy has won 22 times in Western Australia, while Dancing Diamonds was placed twice in group ones and won at group 3 level as a 2yr-old. Code Red also won six races in New Zealand before being exported to Perth.

The good results for Otago-reared yearlings did not end there, as Arden's Ruler also attracted Rosati's attention. A full brother to Arden's Darlin, Arden's Ruler went for $100,000 to the Sydney owner, and Arden's Darlin's first foal, Arden's Rockstar, sold for $53,000 to Invercargill trainer Robert ''Nip'' Crooks.

Tuapeka Lodge fetched $55,000 for Tuapeka Troy (Mach Three-Tuapeka Christa), who will join Tim and Anthony Butt's setup at Premier Stables, in Christchurch.

Mosgiel trainer Graeme Anderson and his partner, Wendy Muldrew, ensured some good horseflesh came back towards Dunedin, successfully bidding for Mainland Banner's half-brother, Titan Banner. The Art Major colt had reached $80,000 when the hammer came down.

Dunedin owner Steve Thompson was also busy, buying three lots above the $50,000 mark. His richest purchase was Mighty Flying Major, an Art Major-Fleet's Pocket colt whoreached $67,500 when presented by vendors Lex and Heather Williams, of One Over Lodge.

The Gore owners of Springbank Richard and Springbank Sam, Alistair and Denise Smith, spent $127,500 on Ohoka Hall, an Angus Hall-Landoras Special trotting colt, and the Whatever Syndicate, which races Franco Ledger, bought the Mach Three-Macy Gray colt I Try, who was also prepared by the Mees.
