Rugby: Likely contenders for No 12

With Sonny Bill Williams leaving the building, rugby writer Steve Hepburn looks at four candidates to fill his shoes in the black jersey.

Ma'a Nonu

Now we all know why he played no part in the June internationals. After a stand-out effort in the black jersey last year, he is the obvious candidate and appears to be getting back to some semblance of form. But serious doubt if he will be around at the next World Cup, so maybe someone else should be.

Tamati Ellison

Looks a certainty for the squad, and his impressive displays at centre for the Highlanders means he could be a starter in the No 12 jersey. Has the skills on both attack and defence to easily slot into the area. Does not possess the greatest kicking game but that requirement seems to have disappeared from the All Black playbook.

Dan Carter

With Aaron Cruden finally walking the international stage with some aplomb, maybe it is time for Carter to go one place further out. He started his domestic and international career here and has the defensive game to match the best. But his body is not what it was and one wonders if he has the got the clout to take the ball up and get over the advantage line.

Stephen Donald

Well, it is a long shot. But why not?

He was the hero last time he wore the black jersey and has always been a good runner.

It was tried once before, and failed miserably, so surely it could not go wrong again. But then again it might. And probably will.
