The former Otago Nuggets player was just a pup when he won a title with Waikato in 2002.
He had to wait another 10 years for a second NBL ring but it was worth the wait.
He drilled some crucial three-pointers in a 12-point haul to help his side beat the Wellington Saints 89-83 in a tense final in Wellington on Sunday night.
Being able to play an influential role made the match that much more memorable for the 32-year-old.
Allen, who was raised in Dunedin and still has family living in the area, survived a serious motor vehicle accident in August last year and said he was "lucky to be alive".
He broke his collarbone in several places and required 150-160 stitches in his head.
"The scar is a keeper," he joked.
"I was skinned from head to toe. It puts a new perspective on life."
He was in hospital for about 10 days and it was about six weeks before he could resume training.
For Pirates coach Judd Flavell, Sunday's win was a chance to finally cut down a section of the net.
Flavell played in five NBL finals during a 15-year career but had to settle for second each time.
Veteran Pirates forward Dillon Boucher was at the other end of the spectrum. He now has nine NBL titles to go with his three Australian titles.
American Ernest Scott top-scored for the Saints with 28 points, and experienced forward Casey Frank grabbed seven rebounds and scored 19 points.
Pirates centre Alex Pledger got into early foul trouble but produced a dominant performance with 20 points and nine rebounds, while imports Ron Dorsey (18 points) and Ismail Muhammad (16 points) helped make the difference.
