In an interview with Radio Sport this morning, Hesson said his family were shaken by an attempted car-jacking.
"We had to go on the roof and people were shaking the car, trying to get in," Hesson told Radio Sport. "Obviously the kids were pretty upset and at that stage we decided this wasn't a great place to be."
The following day a grenade exploded less than a mile from his home, reinforcing the family's fears.
Hesson coached Otago for six years and his record ranked him as the most successful Otago coach since Ray Hunt almost 40 years ago.
In today's interview, Hesson said he would be interested in taking over John Wright's role with the Black Caps.
