The proposed $7 million Around the Mountain Cycle Trail that it was hoped would be open at this time next year has received a setback in the resource application process.
The 184km cycle track, part of Prime Minister John Key's $50 million cycleway initiative, would start at Walter Peak homestead, run towards Mossburn, past the Mavora Lakes, turn east and then north to follow State Highway 6 to Kingston.
Of the 207 submissions received to date, 108 oppose the construction, 67 support it, 27 support it in principle and five are neutral.
Resource management manager Simon Moran said most of the submissions supported the trail in principle but opposed it running through the upper Oreti River. He said most would prefer that the route followed the Mararoa River.
He said resource management staff would now consider whether any further information was required from the applicant.
