The 4ha blaze on Scroggs Hill Rd started about 2.45pm yesterday and initially threatened properties in the area.
The fire had been contained with the help of more than 30 firefighters and the helicopters, a Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said.
About 6pm, four fire appliances - two with tanks - and one helicopter remained on the scene to tackle hotspots.
A spotter would remain overnight to monitor the site and ensure there were no flare-ups.
The spokesman said "very good work" from fire crews meant the fire did not reach nearby properties.
Appliances from as far as Balclutha, as well as Brighton, St Kilda, Lookout Point, Mosgiel and rural resources from four Wakari crews worked to extinguish the blaze.
An Otago Daily Times photographer at the scene yesterday said flames were rising about 15m into the air.
The cause of the fire was not known, the spokesman said.
