Otago homes claimed the two top honours at this year's Southern Registered Master Builders House of the Year awards.

The residence which won House of the Year is in Cromwell, while Supreme Renovation of the Year went to a home in Arrowtown.

The results of the regional competition were revealed at a gala dinner on Saturday.

Cromwell company Spearhead Developments won House of the Year for its "leading-edge architectural design", and also claimed the Carters New Home award, in the $1million to $1.5million category, and the Local Craftsmanship award.

Arrowtown company BTP Construction won the Southern Registered Master Builders 2019 Supreme Renovation of the Year award, for its clever use of recycled materials.

The company also won the renovation award in the $500,000 to $1million category.

In a statement, the judges said the Cromwell home was a "challenging build".

"There are long, shallow sloping hand-pitch roofs and ceilings throughout, with hips and gutters that appear to have grown from the natural schist and grasses.

"The acute angles and long sloping windows almost blend the ceilings and walls together as one.

"The oak ceiling panels throughout the home have been faultlessly perfected, and the borrowed glass panels flood light throughout the entire home."

The Arrowtown renovation made use of recycled beams and posts - and there was also corrugated cladding installed as a rain screen.

The Supreme Renovation of the Year award went to a BTP Construction home in Arrowtown.

Homes from around Otago and Southland were recognised in the southern awards, as well as Dunedin company Colin Thom Builder, which won the Plumbing World Bathroom Excellence Award.

There were 19 Gold Award winners from the Southern area, which will compete against Gold Award winners from around the country to find the National Top 100 Gold Award finalists.

Homes from Dunedin, Mosgiel, Wanaka, Queenstown and Oamaru also claimed awards.

The national winners will be announced on November 23 at gala dinner in Auckland.
