Invercargill's Mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt has another challenger for the upcoming mayoral race.

City councillor Darren Ludlow confirmed today he will stand for the mayoralty this year.

"I had expressed interest in a position for quite few years, but always said the time was not right."

After 18 years on the council, he now felt the time was right and a lot of people had been asking him "to step forward".

"After a long talk with my family and considering everything, we decided to give a go."

Mr Ludlow is in his sixth term as a councillor, and served five years in the role of deputy mayor until May 2017.

He also is the Manager of Radio Southland and serves as chairman of the council's Finance and Policy committee, Hearings Panel, Events Committee, District Licensing Committee, and Child Youth and Family Friendly Committee.

In March, the city's deputy mayor, Rebecca Amundsen, also announced her candidacy for the October election.

Sir Tim also confirmed he would run for mayor again.
