Benaiah Dunn (16) and his brother Thomas (13) late last year came second overall in the New Zealand regional final of the International Youth Silent Film Festival (IYSFF) competition with their short film The Chase.
Last Friday, The Chase gained second place internationally at an awards ceremony in Portland, Oregon.
Directed by Benaiah and filmed by Thomas, the film also featuring fellow Taieri College pupils Logan Carter, Jack McAtamney and Angus McCutcheon.
It was inspired by silent film-era star Buster Keaton and featured a chase through Middlemarch township before an elaborate climb on a nearby bridge.
The IYSFF is a competition that challenges film-makers 20 years and under in the US, New Zealand and Australia to create a three-minute silent film set to a musical score.
At home in Middlemarch, Benaiah watched a live stream of the awards and said their second place ''was pretty good to hear''.
He planned to study film at the Southland Institute of Technology.
