People in South Dunedin will soon have faster access to an ambulance with the opening of St John's new Hillside Station on Saturday.
More than 100 people attended the opening of the station on Hillside Rd in South Dunedin.
Joyce Whyman, the chairwoman of St John's Dunedin area committee, said the refurbishment of the building was completed several weeks ago.
After some fine-tuning, the station would be fully operational from later this month.
One ambulance, a patient transfer vehicle and crews for both would be based at the station 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The station was needed because South Dunedin's population and traffic patterns had changed and St John wanted to improve response times, she said.
A new ambulance was also dedicated at Saturday's opening ceremony.
