A helicopter has been called in to help firefighters from Frankton and Arrowtown battle a blaze across the Shotover River from Tucker Beach, near Queenstown.
A Fire Service spokesman said the fire was by Fitzpatrick Rd on farmland, but had spread to bluffs by the river, making access difficult.
He said there was ''no major panic'', but access issues meant the helicopter was needed.
