Auckland's historic Birdcage Tavern has finally completed its 40 metre move to a new temporary site after what has been described as the slowest pub crawl ever.
The 124-year-old building had to be moved so work could take place on the Victoria Park Tunnel project before the tavern is shifted back to its original location after six months.
New Zealand Transport Agency state highways manager Tommy Parker said the move was a significant engineering and logistical achievement.
"The Victoria Park Tunnel team which took up the challenge has done a great job. In fact, it has made engineering history."
The project involved sliding the 600-tonne building 40m along lubricated beams over two days.
The building has a high historic classification and heritage features include the oriel window over the corner entrance, a wooden staircase, double hung windows, plastered brick chimneys, timber skirtings and architraves, and board and batten ceilings.
