• Entries sought for art awards
The Otago Art Society hosts the 2010 Edinburgh Realty Premier Art Awards next month. Entries for the exhibition close on July 16. All artists resident in the South Island are eligible to enter. • Art meets science
Art meets science in events in Dunedin as part of the New Zealand International Science Festival.
Dunedin-based film-maker and medical doctor Paul Trotman has worked with the Dunedin Public Art Gallery in preparing the exhibition "Still Life: The Art of Anatomy", which brings together historical and contemporary items, such as Dr John Halliday Scott's elegant anatomical drawings and old master prints, porcelain and wax casts of aspects of the body and interactive computer-generated 3-D anatomical models.
The exhibition is on at Dunedin Public Art Gallery on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11, 10am-5pm.
Other events are:
- DPAG, Saturday, 1.30pm-4pm: Dr Paul Trotman's film Donated to Science, followed by a talk from Dr Trotman.
- ROCDA Gallery, 73 Princes St, July 6-11: "Blend: Art-Sci Exhibition". Includes works by artists including Claire Beynon, Nicola Gibbons, Sue Marshall, Sue Novell, Catherine Cocker, Laura Blake, Pete Gorman, Robyn Webster.
- Otago Art Society, Railway Station, July 6-11: "Science As Art" photo exhibition.
- St David Lecture Theatre, cnr St David and Cumberland streets, July 6, 12.30pm-1pm: "Wild the City", presented by Tess Bunning.
• Dancesport event planned
Dancers from as far away as Auckland are expected to compete at a new event organised for next month in Dunedin.
The NZFDT Otago Winter Dancesport Championships are planned for the Glenroy Auditorium on August 7, and will include ballroom, Latin American, new vogue and ceroc styles, organiser Donna Ryalls, of the Performance Dance School, says.
Entries for registered and unregistered dancers of all ages close on July 16. Email inquiries to d.rthornton@hotmail.com.
• Goldie v Lindauer
Works by New Zealand portrait painters Charles Goldie and Gottfried Lindauer are hanging side-by-side at the Auckland Art Gallery, giving a rare chance to directly compare the works, exhibition curator Jane Davidson-Ladd says. The 40 works show distinct differences in their styles and approaches to subject, particularly their depictions of Maori, she says.
Prior to displaying the images, gallery staff contacted the descendants of many of the Maori in the paintings to get their approval.
They were overwhelmingly supportive, she says.

• New direction for actor
After playing Badjelly and several other witches at the Playhouse in the past, Anita Cummings decided it was time she directed a play. She's doing Badjelly the Witch with a group of children at the Playhouse these school holidays.
She runs her own children's after-school drama classes, lectures in drama at the University of Otago's College of Education and has played in many productions, including presenting Storytime on Channel 9 and playing Anthea Crichton in Shortland St.
It is children's theatre for children and even adults, who will have a chuckle or two, she says.
"For me, children's theatre without children is not true children's theatre. They are the future. We need to use the talents we have here, develop and treasure what children have to offer."
Badjelly the Witch runs from July 3 -11.
