The Catlins Area School
Summer sports are getting into gear in the sunny Catlins with recent coaching visits in touch and cricket being enjoyed by a wide range of pupils.
Quentin Gare has recently been named in the Otago Country cricket squad, while White Fern Sara McGlashan spent an afternoon alongside Claire Taylor from Otago Cricket coaching year 7-10 girls.
Otago Touch development officer Grant Milne has also visited to pass on touch skills to an enthusiastic group of players of all ages as well as several staff.
The school's Get-to-Go Challenge team finished fourth in the recent event in and around Dunedin. The team competed brilliantly in the mountain biking and kayaking but did not go so well in the orienteering.
John McGlashan shooting
The John McGlashan trapshooting squad recently attended the Bodkin Shield. It is a three-day open event, comprising 130-plus shooters, mainly very experienced men, many of whom have represented New Zealand.
On the first day at Moa Creek, Grant Ramsay claimed overall first place after a shootoff involving six shooters. He shot more than 100 targets over the day and missed just one.
On day two, Garth Sanders performed equally as well. He was the only shooter over the day to get 60 out of 60.
Six shooters qualified for the shootoff and Garth finished second, one place ahead of his father. Hugh Lindsay and Clint McAughtrie joined the above two and ensured the team performed with credit. The boys also competed in the Taieri Shield event in which Grant Ramsay had another very successful day and the five-man team brought back the shield, adding it to the Scott Shield they won in Nightcaps.
Columba events
A large turnout for the annual meeting of the Columba College sports council emphasises the support the school community has for this successful school initiative.

Goals, expectations and challenges have already been set for the coming year.
The sports council recently hosted a function for the 49 school pupils who coach and referee junior sports teams at Columba College. It is pleasing to see so many girls prepared to give up their own time to assist the growing of sport at the school.
