Today is the first day of spring, and while the season should be warmer than normal, expect to  need your jacket for three weeks.

Niwa principal forecasting scientist Chris Brandolino said there was a 60% chance average spring temperatures would be higher than normal across New Zealand.

Wanaka, Dunedin, Lauder and Windsor all had average spring temperatures of 10degC while Queenstown and Ranfurly were usually a degree colder.

All of the region could expect a slightly balmier spring than usual but coastal parts of Otago were likely to feel the warmth before Central Otago.

MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn said changeable conditions were normal for the region in spring.

"Dunedin will be just below average spring temperatures for the first three or so weeks and Central Otago and Queenstown will be a touch colder again."

Present warm sea surface temperatures, and the expectation they would last was an indication things should be warmer than normal, Mr Brandolino said.

There was a 45% chance the region would experience normal rainfall.
