The year 11 Kavanagh College pupil has capped a successful season by being picked in the New Zealand under-15 softball training squad.
He will attend a camp alongside 35 others in Upper Hutt from May 24-26.
From there a squad will be selected to represent the Development Sox at the Friendship Games, in Sydney in July.
Both a pitcher and catcher, the 15-year-old got a taste of the next level earlier this year.
He performed well at the under-15 national championships and while the Otago team went winless he was named in the tournament rest team as a catcher.
The level was higher than what he was used to and he was expecting more of that later this month.
''It's a massive step up,'' he said.
''I've been training over the off-season, so I'm trying to keep in shape.''
He said in the North Island players executed more consistently, even in things such as basic fielding drills.
''It's completely different from down here.
''Just the skills and the number of people that play up there - they've just got the numbers to play and we don't, really.''
Despite that, he hoped the players from his Otago under-15 squad would carry on.
He said everyone had enjoyed the season, although would be moving into the under-18 age-group next year.
Forrester also plays his for Cardinals in the Dunedin club competition.
He played both under-15 and senior reserve grades this year, although hopes to move up to premier next year.
While playing against men could be ''scary'', he said he needed it and it would help him get better.
He also plays for Taieri College, as Kavanagh does not have a team.
On top of all that, he manages to fit in plenty of badminton and had been invited to training squads for that, too.
However, softball took priority and that was where his ultimate goal - playing for the Black Sox - lay.
Playing more at that higher level would help him get there.
''It's just being exposed to everyone else, trying to play as many tournaments up north and trying to get exposed to better quality softball as much as I can.''
